Nicole Morrigan is a multi-media artist based near London, UK but soon to be up North
My work in narrative painting explores how contemporary politics seeps into the fabric of everyday life. The stories I stage on canvas highlight the way ideology is rehearsed in domestic spaces and family dynamics, the media and cultural rituals that might appear ordinary but are loaded with political weight.
The works present scenes where intimacy collides with authority shadowed by broader political forces, using colour, composition and gesture to explore the tension between surface familiarity and underlying unease. Figures objects and settings become characters in a wider story about control and the shaping of identity; avatars for the larger forces of patriarchy nationalism and nostalgia.
By reasserting narrative within the medium I aim to show painting as a political act used as an argument against passivity, a rejection of nostalgia as comfort and a reminder that the so-called personal is always political.
